Marian University men’s basketball (2-4, 1-3 NACC) fell to Rockford 115-110 in a game that required four overtimes to be decided.
Marian jumped all over the Regents to open the game scoring seven points in just 1:27 forcing a Rockford timeout. Rockford rallied to cut the deficit down to two points shortly after but a 16-4 Sabre run immediately after gave Marian their largest lead at 30-16 with 7:06 left in the first half.
Once again, the Regents were able to rally back and took the lead at 38-37 with 1:01 remaining only to have a three-pointer from senior Tyrese Pinson give Marian a 40-38 lead at halftime.
The Regents opened the second half strong taking a 58-53 lead with 10:45 left to play. Marian rebounded by scoring 13-unanswered points to retake the lead at 66-58 with 7:56 remaining. Rockford once again was able to rally scoring eight-straight points to tie the game. The remainder of the half was back-and-forth leading to a 74-74 tie before a Marian shot at the buzzer was no good to force overtime.
The first two overtimes saw even action from both squads with Rockford coming up short in the final seconds to end the game. Pinson would have a clutch steal at the end of the second overtime to force a third overtime. The third overtime saw the Sabres miss out on a chance to end the game in the final seconds before Rockford outscored Marian 16-11 in the fourth overtime to secure the win.
The Sabres had a big game from Pinson who finished with his first career double-double scoring a team-high 31 points with 15 rebounds to go with four assists and four steals. Sophomore Logan Hamilton also had a double-double scoring 18 points with 11 rebounds. Off the bench, senior Kelvin Jones scored 15 points.
Marian hits the road for a 4:15 p.m. at Lakeland Saturday, December 8.
