Marian University men’s basketball (3-7, 2-7 NACC) dominated on both ends of the court in a 77-49 victory over Lakeland.
The Sabres came out shooting and could not miss as Marian made 10 of their first 13 shots to take a 23-6 lead with 11:32 left to play in the first half. A pair of timeouts from Lakeland wouldn’t slow down the Sabres as Marian built their lead to as large as 23 in the first half at 34-11. Marian would hold a 43-21 advantage when the halftime horn finally sounded.
Marian went 19-34 (.559) from the field in the opening half with sophomore Tyler Gouin scoring 22 points off 10-12 (.833) shooting.
The Sabres didn’t allow Lakeland to get back into the game in the second half as Marian continued to build on their lead. The Sabres would have their largest lead come with 5:25 left in the when they led by 38 points at 74-37. The Muskies were able to put together a run to close out the game but the Sabres were able to finish with a 77-49 win.
Offensively, Marian finished the game shooting 33-60 (.550) from the field including 9-21 (.429) from beyond the arc. Gouin finished with a game-high 22 points, while junior David Britton added 19 and fellow junior Dylan Gmeiner chipped in 12 off the bench.
The Marian defense was just as impressive holding Lakeland to only 2-24 (.083) shooting from beyond the arc.
Marian closes out the series with Lakeland tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 27, for a 5 p.m. tip.
