Marian University men’s basketball (5-15, 3-12 NACC) defeated Edgewood 76-72 to open the final month of the season.
The majority of the first half was back-and-forth with Marian holding a 29-27 lead with 4:31 left in the first half. The Sabres then went on an 8-2 run to take the first significant lead of the game at 37-29, which forced an Eagle timeout. Edgewood would score four unanswered points out of the break, but a three-pointer from senior Will Olewinski gave the Sabres a 40-33 lead at the half.
Out of the break, Edgewood opened with a 9-2 run to tie the game at 42-42 with 17:33 left to play. Edgewood would eventually take the lead at 44-43 with 16:25 building their advantage to as large as eight points with 10:34 remaining.
Marian was able to rally going on a 9-2 run to tie the game at 62-62 with 5:31 on the clock. The game was a seesaw affair the remainder but Marian would come out on top after closing out the final 3:37 with a 13-7 rally. In the final minute, the Sabres were able to go 5-6 from the charity stripe to seal the win.
The Sabres had another strong shooting performance going 27-63 (.429) from the field including 7-19 (.368) from three-point range. Marian also won the battle in the paint by a 34-24 margin and outscored the Eagles in points off turnovers 13-1.
Sophomore Tristan Van Ess produced his first career double-double with a game-high 25 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore Tavaris McCullough also had a strong offensive game with 23 points and four assists, while Tyrese Pinson posted six points with five rebounds and six assists.
Marian hits the road to take on Dominican Wednesday, February 6 at 7 p.m. in NACC action.
