Marian men’s ACHA Division II enjoys strong first month of season

Marian University men’s ACHA Division II (7-1-1, 2-0-0 NCHL) has opened the 2019-20 season strong with their lone blemish being an overtime loss to Sault.

The Sabres opened the season with a convincing home sweep of UW-Eau Claire before their overtime loss and tie to Sault.  Marian then opened NCHL play with an 8-2 and 11-2 victory over Robert Morris (Ill.) before closing out the month at the WCCHA Showcase.  The Sabres had a dominant showing at the showcase defeating St. Thomas 4-2, St. Cloud State 7-1, and Minnesota State-Mankato 11-1.

Marian has been getting it done on both ends of the ice with the offense averaging 6.8 goals per game and the defense allowing just 1.9 goals per game.  Marian has already posted six games this season where they scored five or more goals along with four games where they allowed fewer than two goals.

The Sabres have eight student-athletes with double-digit points already led by Connor Rosaasen who has three goals with a team-high 12 assists for 15 points.  Two of his three goals have been while the Sabres were short-handed.  Brandon Mills has been the top goal scorer for the Sabres so far this season with 11 tallies to go with three assists for 14 points.  Three of his goals have come on the power play and one of his scores proved to be a game-winner.

On the defensive end, the Sabres have three student-athletes that have shared time in net.  Justin Davidson has seen the most time boasting a 3-1-1 mark with a 2.20 goals-against average and .938 save percentage.  Davidson has a pair of performances with more than 40 saves this season to bring his season total to 165.  Jonathan Bateman and William McCreight are each unbeaten on the season with a 2-0-0 record and 44 saves on the year.  Bateman currently leads the team with a 1.42 goals-against average, while McCreight has a goals-against average of 1.50.

Marian hits the road for Grand Valley State Nov. 2-3 in a clash of two teams that are always in contention for a trip to Nationals.  The next home game for the Sabres will be Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. against Concordia Wisconsin before Marian hosts Lindenwood for Parents Weekend Nov. 15-16.
