LOVES PARK, Ill. – Marian University baseball (16-11, 8-8 NACC) was able to bounce back with a sweep of Rockford on the road with scores of 10-0 and 10-4.
The Sabre offense was able to strike consistently in the opener but the real story was another dominant start from sophomore Garrett Martin. Marian opened the scoring in the third with an RBI single from junior Nick Bastien and a run-producing double from sophomore Michael Snow.
Marian added to their lead with three runs in the fifth coming off of RBI hits from senior Travis Slywka, Bastien, and sophomore Jonah Landowski. An error in the sixth put the Marian score at 7-0 before Bastien brought in another run and later scored on a wild pitch in the eighth inning. Another error allowed junior Jake Arens to score in the ninth to set the 10-0 final.
Martin (5-1) went 8.0 innings striking out 12 to earn the victory as he pushed his scoreless innings streak to 22.0. Offensively, Bastien went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, while senior Jake Falish also had a multi-hit game.
The Sabres opened game two with three runs in the first two innings with an error allowing two runs to be scored in the first before a sacrifice fly from Bastien. Rockford scored their first runs of the day with a three-spot in the sixth before a late push from Marian gave the Sabres a sweep.
Bastien had his second sacrifice fly of the game in the seventh before he was hit by a pitch in the eighth to plate a run. Senior Matt Nordlund also had an RBI hit in the eighth with another Rockford giving MU a 9-3 advantage. An RBI single from Falish added to the Sabre lead in the ninth to help seal the victory.
Senior Brady Nehring tossed 5.2 innings with seven strikeouts only allowing two earned runs in the start, while junior Tim Dziergas (2-1) earned the win going 3.1 innings only allowing one run. Arens, Falish, and sophomore Sean Meyer all had multi-hit games with Falish scoring three times in the victory.
Marian is scheduled to return home Tuesday, April 23 for a 7 p.m. non-conference game against Lawrence.
