Marian baseball opens NACC play with split against WLC

March 29, 2019

Marian University baseball (9-4, 1-1 NACC) opened conference play splitting with Wisconsin Lutheran in their first games at Herr-Baker Field.

The Sabres led for much of the opening game but couldn’t pull away stranding 15 runners on base in a 4-2 loss to open the twin bill.  Junior Jake Arens singled to bring in senior Jake Falish in the bottom half of the first frame and sophomore Jonah Landowski hit a double in the next inning to plate junior Nick Bastien.  The pair of RBI hits gave the Sabres a 2-0 lead until the sixth when their lead was cut in half by the Warriors.

Wisconsin Lutheran was then able to break through for three runs in the eighth using a pair of errors to score a pair of unearned runs.  The Sabres were able to get the tying run in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth but a strikeout and line out closed out the game.

Marian had four multi-hit games led by Arens who went 3-for-5 with a run driven in.  On the bump, senior Ty Peccioli tossed 7.0 innings allowing just two runs with six punch outs.

Marian opened the second game strong taking advantage of five walks in the opening inning to cruise to a 9-1 win.  Sophomore Sean Meyer opened the scoring with a single that plated a pair of runs before fellow sophomore Josh Gates brought in Arens with a sacrifice fly.  Bastien and Falish closed out the scoring for the inning after they each drew a walk with the bases loaded.

The Sabres added to their lead after a double from Gates and sacrifice fly from Lanowski plated runs in the fifth.  Sophomore Nick Dugandzic then brought in Falish an inning later to put the score at 8-0.  The Warriors were able to end the shutout with a two-out single in the eighth before Meyer closed out the scoring with an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning.

Meyer led the way for the offense going 3-for-4 with a pair of walks, while Falish scored three times to go with a multi-hit game.  Senior Jordan Bock (2-0) earned the victory holding WLC scoreless through 7.0 innings of work scattering three hits and striking out five.

Marian hits the road to take on No. 1/2 Concordia Chicago Sunday, March 31 for a noon doubleheader in NACC action.
