Marian baseball bats stay hot in sweep of UW-Superior

March 18, 2019

TUCSON, Ariz. – Marian University baseball (4-0, 0-0 NACC) defeated UW-Superior 7-6 and 14-6 to open the season 4-0 for the first time since 1993.

The game started as a pitching duel as the two squads would only combine for four hits through the first three innings.  Marian managed to work out of a pair of jams in the fourth and fifth inning before opening the scoring in the bottom of the fifth.  A wild pitch would put sophomore Nick Dugandzic and junior Tim Dziergas in scoring position for junior Nick Bastien who brought in Dugandzic with a single.  Then with first and third, Bastien would get caught up in a rundown just long enough for another Sabre run to score and put Marian ahead 2-0.

The Yellow Jackets finally managed to break through in the sixth putting up six runs but the Sabres were able to battle back in the bottom half of the inning.  Junior Jacob Arens singled to left center to bring in a pair of runs before Dugandzic was able to cut the deficit to one with a single himself.  After a walk from senior Travis Slywka loaded the bases, sophomore Ricky Lee hit into a fielder’s choice to score junior Landon Gosch and heads up base running from Dugandzic allowed him to score the go-ahead run.

UW-Superior made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh but a heads up defensive play from senior Jake Falish nabbed the tying run at the plate to secure the victory.

Dugandzic paced the offense with the only multi-hit game going 2-3 with a pair of runs scored.  Sophomore Logan Bosquez earned his first victory of the season tossing the final 1.2 innings only allowing one hit with a pair of punch outs.

In the finale, Marian scored 12 runs in the final four innings taking advantage of nine UW-Superior errors to secure the sweep.  An error allowed Dugandzic to score in the first and a triple from Falish plated Gosch in the second to put the teams even at 2-2 heading into the fourth.  Marian would put up five runs in the fourth inning to take a 7-2 lead with run-producing hits from Arens, sophomore Sean Meyer, and Lee.  A Bastien single extended the lead to 8-2 in the fifth before UW-Superior cut their deficit to two with four runs in the bottom half of the inning.

The Sabre offense continued to push with Arens and senior Cole Clark driving in runs as part of a three-run inning in the sixth.  A double steal from Dugandzic and Falsih opened the scoring for the seventh before an Arens double and Lee single drove in runs to close out another three-run inning and set the final at 14-6.

Sophomore Noah Imrie earned his first career victory on the bump going 4.1 innings, while seniors Brady Nehring and Connor Nelson each tossed 1.0 innings of perfect ball combining for four punch outs.

Arens had a big game to lead the offense going 4-5 with three runs scored and three driven in.  Lee also went 2-5 driving in four runs, while Sean Meyer had a multi-hit game and Dugandzic finished with four runs scored.
