Marian University director of athletics Jason Bartelt has announced the addition of women’s lacrosse to Marian and the hiring of David Pomeroy to head the program which will begin competition during the 2018-19 academic year.
“I am proud to announce the addition of women’s lacrosse to our athletic department,” commented Bartelt on the addition of women’s lacrosse. “This addition provides another athletic opportunity for student-athletes looking to continue their passion for sports while achieving a higher education at Marian.”
Women’s lacrosse becomes the 21st varsity sport at Marian University with the addition of men’s lacrosse who will open their inaugural season later this year. The home opener for the men’s lacrosse program is set for Thursday, March 8 when Marian welcomes Calvin to Smith Field. The addition of women’s lacrosse in 2018-19 will cap off a run of four consecutive years Sabre athletics will have a varsity sport play their inaugural season; men’s volleyball (2015-16), ACHA hockey (2016-17), men’s lacrosse (2017-18).
“I am very excited to be adding women’s lacrosse to the lineup of Marian athletics teams,” commented Marian University president Andrew Manion. “Coach Pomeroy has a strong history of getting collegiate teams started and I think he will make a great addition to our coaching staff.”
Pomeroy becomes the inaugural women’s lacrosse coach and brings 10 years of coaching experience to Marian. He most recently was the head women’s lacrosse coach at Division III Northland College where the LumberJills played their inaugural season this past spring. Prior to Northland, Pomeroy served as an assistant coach, head goalie coach and recruiting coordinator for three seasons at Division II Indiana University of Pennsylvania. During his time with the Crimson Hawks, 13 student-athletes earned all-conference recognition, nine student-athletes were named all-region and six student-athletes earned All-American status. IUP also finished the season ranked in the national polls all three seasons and off the field were named an IWLCA All-Academic team twice.
“I want to thank president Manion and athletic director Jason Bartelt with the trust they have bestowed upon me to lead the inaugural women’s lacrosse program at Marian University,” commented Pomeroy. “The support from the upper administration and the athletic department makes Marian an amazing fit for my personality and goals to succeed on and off the field. I look forward to joining Sabre nation. I am extremely grateful towards Northland College athletics for allowing me the opportunity to start their program. With the addition of Dr. Hal Haynes Northland is certainly headed in the right direction.”
Pomeroy was a standout prep coach prior to his time at IUP and also spent time at the University of Wyoming, University of Denver, Kutztown University and Loyola University of Maryland. Along with his recent coaching duties, Pomeroy has served as an NCAA Division III representative for the IWLCA Officials Recruitment and Development committee since 2016 along with the NCAA Division II IWLCA Bylaws committee from 2013-2016.
“I am honored to have coach Pomeroy join our athletic department and lead our women’s lacrosse program,” commented Bartelt on the hiring of Pomeroy. “He has had tremendous success starting women’s lacrosse programs and we look forward to watching him build our program here at Marian.”
Joining the coaching staff with Pomeroy will be Courtney Palmer who served as his assistant at Northland. Palmer served as an assistant coach for both the LumberJill volleyball and lacrosse programs after a standout career at Waldorf University where she played volleyball and softball.
