In a match-up of the top two teams from the NCHL a season ago, Marian University ACHA hockey (14-0-0, 8-0-0 NCHL) swept Aurora with final scores of 3-1 in each game.
The Sabres scored a goal in every period over the course of the weekend with Brandon Mills opening the scoring in the opener, assists to Miles Giorgione and Colin Wilson. As expected, the opener was tight throughout with the Spartans answering on the power play to open the second period. The tie wouldn’t last, however, as the Sabres managed to take the lead for good 1:38 later with a goal from Dan Liberko, assists to Bryton Tomko and Kirill Proskurin.
Marian was able to ice the game with a power play goal at the 2:44 mark of the third period netted by Daniel Roe, assists to Jake Weldon and Paul Kinder. The Spartans would hold a slight 36-35 advantage in shots for the game but Justin Davidson continued his strong start to the season making 34 saves.
The finale of the series was similar with physical play and a tight game from start to finish. The Sabres once again opened the scoring in the first period with a goal from Nikita Sokov and assists from Liberko and Kinder. Just like the night before, Aurora would manage to tie the game with a goal to open the second period before Miles Giorgione gave Marian the lead for good. Giorgione was assisted by Tyren Boots and Sheamus Stoyle and later set the 3-1 final with a goal in the third period, assisted by Sokov.
Davidson closed out the series with another spectacular performance making 35 saves as the Sabres edged Aurora in shots by a 39-36 margin.
A total of 10 different Sabres recorded a point over the course of the weekend.
Marian remains at home to take on Concordia Wisconsin Friday, Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. from Blue Line before closing out the series at CUW the next day at 8:30 p.m.
