Marian University ACHA Division II hockey finished the first half of the season ranked second in the central region after going 17-1-1 with their lone loss coming in overtime.
Marian was able to close out the first half strong with four decisive victories sweeping DePaul on the road and sweeping UW-Oshkosh in a home-and-home series. The Sabres have been able to get things done on both ends of the ice with the offense averaging 6.2 goals per game and the defense only allowing 2.1 goals per game. Marian had 12 games with at least five goals, including three games with double-digit goals, and 12 games where they allowed fewer than three goals.
The first half saw the Sabres play six teams that are currently ranked in the central region. The biggest sweep of the first half remains to be the pair of victories over Lindenwood who sits one spot behind Marian and trail by just 0.115 points through the ACHA rating system. Along with the sweep against Lindenwood, Marian defeated No. 5 St. Thomas at the WCCHA Showcase, swept No. 8 Grand Valley State in a non-conference road series, swept No. 15 Concordia Wisconsin in NCHL action, and defeated No. 18 UW-Eau Claire in a season-opening non-conference home series. Marian is slated to take on a pair of ranked teams in the second half taking on No. 7 Aurora in a home-and-home NCHL series to open the second half, before hosting No. 14 in a non-conference home series.
The Sabres had four student-athletes record at least 25 points in the first half led by Connor Rosaasen who scored nine goals, four short-handed, with a team-high 22 assists for 31 points. Bryton Tomko and Brandon Mills each scored 15 goals to lead the Sabres in scoring, while Paul Kinder also finished in double-digits with 10 goals. Tomko also led the squad with five game-winning goals, and Mills recorded a team-best five power-play tallies.
Marian sent four different student-athletes between the pipes in the first half with Justin Davidson leading the way boasting a 10-1-1 mark. Davidson went on to post a 2.27 goals-against average after allowing just 26 goals with a .939 save percentage. William McCreight saw the second-highest amount of action going 4-0-0 with a 1.75 goals-against average and a .934 save percentage. Jonathan Bateman added three wins with a 1.97 goals-against average, while Jake Grabarek didn’t allow a goal in his 38 minutes of action over two games.
The Sabres are scheduled to play eight regular-season games in the second half with six of them being at home. Marian will then once again host the NCHL Hap Cup tournament from Friday, February 14 to Sunday, February 16.
