Senior Gianni Mangone of Marian University men’s hockey has been voted on to the Google Cloud Academic All-District team as voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The Google Cloud Academic All-America program was created in the 1950’s and has become one of the most prestigious honors that takes into account athletic achievement and academic success. The program requires student-athletes achieve a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 and play a prominent role on their team.
Mangone (Calgary, Alta.) earns this accolade after leading the Sabre defense once again this past season along with recording a grade point average of 3.98 while majoring in finance. During his final campaign with Marian, he became the all-time program leader for goals from a defenseman with 31 after a multi-goal game against Northland. Mangone also closed out his Sabre career fourth all-time in points amongst defenseman in the program with 65.
The Calgary, Alta. native earned two All-NCHA nods in his career and became the program’s first defenseman to be named an All-American after earning a second team selection from the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) as a junior. He also went on to earn an All-Region selection his junior year and in his career earned three D3Hockey.com Team of the Week selections and two NCHA Player of the Week honors. In the classroom, Mangone was named to the NCHA All-Academic team each year that he was eligible.
The blue liner earned a spot on the at-large team which combines several sports including fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo, and wrestling. The award is broken down into eight regions with Mangone earning his award in the sixth district which comprises of Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.
