Marian University men’s soccer (4-7-1, 2-5-0 NACC) rallied with a pair of late goals to defeat IIT 2-0 in NACC play.
From a sloppy Smith Field, the Scarlet Hawks jumped out early on the Sabres taking an early 12-7 edge in shots in the first half. Despite the offense, Marian held IIT scoreless with senior Ian Chacon making eight saves in the opening stanza.
The second half proved to be much more even with the Sabres netting a pair of goals in a span of 4:20. Sophomore Cade Klusendorf opened the scoring with a free kick from near midfield at the 71:21 mark that no one cleared out and snuck in the goal. Senior Alexis Estela then netted a goal at the 75:41 mark when freshman Juan Herrera sent in a corner kick that hit off the post leaving Estela with an open net in front of the goal.
Both goals were the first of the year for each Sabre and proved to be the difference in a 2-0 victory. Marian finished with 12 shots in the game with Herrera pacing MU with four shots.
Chacon (4-6-1) continued his dominance at home posting his third shutout at Smith Field stopping all 10 shots he faced.
Marian remains at home to take on Rockford at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13 from Smith Field.
