Marian University women’s soccer (1-3-0, 0-0-0 NACC) fell to Ripon in non-conference action by a 4-3 final.
The scoring started early with three shots finding the back of the net in the first 16:16. Freshman Ashley Welk opened the scoring with her second goal of the season in the eighth minute, assist to junior Shannon Coughlin. The Red Hawks then managed to score the next two goals in just a span of 4:07. Coughlin responded in the 39th minute with her second goal of the season, assist to freshman Jenae Balken, to send the teams into the half tied at 2-2.
Ripon would retake the lead in the 64th minute and padded their lead in the 81st minute to go ahead at 4-2. Coughlin then netted her second of the game just 46 seconds later, assist to junior Emily Hill, to bring the Sabres back to within one. The Sabres managed two more shots but neither were able to serve as an equalizer setting the final at 4-3.
Marian finished with a 20-18 advantage in shots behind a 13-10 margin in the second half. Coughlin led the way with five shots behind her five-point game. Sophomore Kylie Lange (1-3-0) made eight saves in the defeat.
Marian hits the road for the first time this season traveling to Knox for an 11 a.m. kick-off Saturday, Sept. 14.
