Hockey skates away with November Sabre of the Month awards

Two hockey players Sabres of the monthJunior Lindsey Strainis of Marian women’s hockey and senior Derek Thorogood of Marian men’s hockey have been named the November Sabres of the Month.

Strainis (Green Bay, Wis.) had a historic month of November that saw her set career records for wins and shutouts during a sweep of Trine.  Strainis opened the Thunder series with a 3-0 shutout to set the shutout mark before a 4-1 win gave her the career wins lead one day later.  Strainis would also earn NCHA Defensive Player of the Week honors after the Trine sweep.  The junior goalie posted a 2.00 goals against average for the month making 185 saves for a .930 save percentage.  Strainis ranks third in the NCHA with 242 saves on the season.

Thorogood (Calgary, Alta.) had a huge month to open his final season as a Sabre recording 12 points in eight games.  Thorogood opened his senior campaign with his first career hat trick in a win over Trine as he went on to score seven goals during the month of November.  The forward posted a team-best +4 on-ice rating during the month and scored the decisive goal in four of the eight games during the month of November; three game-winning goals and one game-tying goal.  Thorogood currently ranks second in the NCHA with seven goals on the year and was named NCHA Offensive Player of the Week twice along with earning a spot on the Team of the Week once.

Marian men’s hockey remains at home as they return to NCHA action against Finlandia Friday, Dec. 1 and No. 1 St. Norbert Saturday, Dec. 2 with puck drop at 7 p.m. for both games.  The Sabre women’s hockey team returns after a week off traveling to Finlandia for a two-game series Dec. 1-2.
