Hartzell and Chacon take first Sabre of the Month award

Soccer and tennis playersA pair of seniors were named the September Sabres of the Month in Meg Hartzell of women’s tennis and Ian Chacon of men’s soccer.

Hartzell (Oshkosh, Wis.) opened her final season as a Sabre in a big way as she helped lead Marian to a 7-3 record, including a 5-1 ledger in conference action.  At the top flight in singles action, Hartzell went 7-3 for the month of September with two of her defeats coming in non-conference action.  She had four sets where she didn’t allow her opponent to win a single game and all seven of her victories for the month were sweeps.  In doubles action, Hartzell went 2-0 at the top flight and held a 6-1 mark at the No. 2 flight.  In three of her eight victories, she and her teammate posted a shutout allowing their opponent to win zero games.  Hartzell was named the NACC Player of the Week Sept. 18 after she posted a combined 4-0 week between singles and doubles.  That week Marian defeated UW-Stevens Point 8-1 for the program’s first victory over a WIAC opponent and swept Lakeland 9-0.

Chacon (Cicero, Ill.) continued his dominance in goal for the Sabres as he opened his final season with Marian.  Chacon started all eight games for the month in goal for the Sabres posting a 1.28 goals against average only allowing 10 goals.  He went on to save a total of 46 shots with an .821 save percentage along with posting four shutouts for the month.  Chacon had back-to-back games where he made 11 saves including a game against Beloit that saw him preserve a 0-0 double overtime tie.  Chacon was named the NACC Defensive Player of the Week after leading Marian to shutout victories over MacMurray and Northland where he made four saves against the LumberJacks.
