Furious rally falls short for Marian men’s lacrosse

MEQUON, Wis. – Marian University men’s lacrosse (0-5, 0-0 MLC) scored the final four goals of the game but fell to Calvin by an 8-7 final.

Marian and Calvin each scored a goal in the first quarter with the Knights scoring their goal with a man-advantage.  The Sabres then opened the second quarter with a goal at 9:23 to take their first lead of the game at 2-1.  Landen Macco netted each goal for the Sabres and was assisted by Nick Klotz.

Calvin responded, however, scoring the final pair of goals in the second quarter to take a 3-2 lead into halftime.  The Knights then dominated the third quarter scoring three goals and forcing six Marian turnovers to take a 6-2 advantage.

Jeremy Eisele opened the scoring for the fourth quarter with an unassisted goal before Calvin netted a pair of goals that were separated by 1:30 to extend their lead to 8-3.  Marian then began their rally when Klotz found the back of the net with 6:54 remaining.  Connor Houlihan then netted the next pair of goals, the first goal was assisted by Klotz, with his second goal coming with just 46 seconds remaining.  Eisele then found the back of the net with only 12 seconds remaining to cut the Sabre deficit to one but Marian couldn’t complete the comeback.

Rob Wilson had a dominating day in the faceoff circle going 14-3 with nine ground balls.  Tommy Gerlach also had five ground balls and was able to cause three turnovers.

Klotz led the Sabres with a four-point game, one goal and three assists, while Eisele and Houlihan each had a pair of goals to lead the offense.

In goal, Gavin Taquino continued to look strong making 15 saves on the 23 shots he faced.

Marian travels to North Central (Minn.) Monday, March 12 at the Chaska Dome for a 4 p.m. start.
