Fragoso ties career goals mark in loss to Dominican

September 25, 2017

Marian University men’s soccer (5-4-0, 0-2-0 NACC) fell to Dominican University by a 3-1 final in NACC action.

The Sabres and Stars played evenly to open the first half with Dominican holding a slim 5-3 advantage on shots.  It wasn’t until a misplayed ball in the final minute that allowed the Stars to take a 1-0 lead heading into the break.

Dominican used the end of the half momentum to pad their lead with a goal 1:11 into the second half.  The Stars then scored their third unanswered goal in the 59th minute off of a penalty kick.

Senior Alonso Fragoso cut into the lead when he sent a shot from the left side to the near post that found a way into the corner, assist to junior Eduardo Estela.  The goal was his 12th of the season and 40th of his Sabre career tying him for the top spot on the all-time career goals list.

Marian dominated most of the action in the second half outshooting Dominican 10-4 but were unable to cut into the deficit anymore.  Fragoso had five shots in the game to lead MU, while fellow senior Israel Tovar had three shots.  Junior Ian Chacon made two saves in goal as he fell to 5-4-0 on the year.

Marian hits the road to take on Lakeland Wednesday, Sept. 27 for a 7 p.m. kick off.
