LOVES PARK, Ill. – In a back-and-forth game, Marian University men’s soccer (8-7-0, 3-4-0 NACC) managed to rally late and defeat Rockford 3-2 in double overtime.
The first half saw no scoring as each team battled evenly with the Regents managing to outshoot the Sabres 5-4. Rockford managed to find the back of the net first in the 68th minute but the Sabres rallied shortly after. A cross from senior Alonso Fragoso into the box was enough to set up fellow senior Muhammed Abshir for his eighth goal on the year in the 74th minute.
The tie wouldn’t last long, however, as Rockford quickly retook the lead just 46-seconds later. Then with only 1:39 remaining in regulation the duo of Fragoso and Abshir once again teamed up to send the game into overtime. The goal was number 20 on the year for Fragoso and came off a similar crossing play as the first goal.
The opening overtime saw three shots but none were on frame. The second overtime would have a similar start until the 106th minute when Abshir sent a through ball behind the middle of the defense to Fragoso who found the back of the net for the second time in the game for the golden goal.
Rockford managed to outshoot the Sabres by a slim 15-12 margin with Fragoso recording a game-high seven shots. In goal, junior Ian Chacon improved to 8-6-0 on the year making four saves.
Marian returns to Smith Field for their final home game of the year Wednesday, Oct. 18 when they host Wisconsin Lutheran at 7 p.m.
