Fast start leads Sabre men’s hockey to tie with Johnnies

November 27, 2017

Marian University (4-2-1, 2-2-0 NCHA) skated to a 3-3 tie against Saint John’s (Minn.) to open a weekend of non-conference action.

The opening period was all Sabres as they would outshoot SJU 15-4 and score a pair of goals in the first 2:58 of the game.  Senior Derek Thorogood opened the scoring 58-seconds with assists to junior Nick Monfils and fellow senior Hunter Stewart.  Stewart then lit the lamp himself on the power play for his second of the season with assists to senior Gianni Mangone and Thorogood.

Saint John’s responded with three unanswered goals, two of which were 2:24 apart in the second period, as SJU took their first lead of the game.

After penalties on each side led to 4-on-4 action, Thorogood would knot the game up at the 11:12 mark for his sixth goal on the year.  Mangone and sophomore Shawn Brennan each had assists on the game-tying goal that eventually forced overtime.

In the extra session, Marian dominated the action sending five shots on goal, while holding SJU to no shots, but nothing was able to find the back of the net leading to the tie.

Sophomore Hunter Vorva made 19 saves including all six shots he faced in the third period to push his record to 4-2-1 on the year.

Marian held a major advantage in shots at 40-22 led by Thorogood who had seven shots on goal and junior Jake Howie who added six shots.  The Sabre penalty kill would hold SJU scoreless on three power plays, while Marian would go 1-3 with a man-advantage.

Marian closes out the weekend when they host Bethel at noon tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 25.
