Sophomore Drew Cowden of Marian University men’s soccer and junior Ashley Welk of Marian University women’s soccer have been named the Sabres of the Month for October.
Cowden (Covington, Wash.) closed out a historic season that saw him tie the single-season record for assists to earn Sabre of the Month recognition. Cowden scored a goal with six assists during the month of October to give him eight total points. Cowden recorded at least one assist in six of seven games and ended the season with a goal and an assist against Edgewood. He finished the season with 13 assists to tie the single-season Marian record and finished the regular season tied for the most assists in the entire nation. Cowden finished the season with 17 points and had at least one point in 11 games. He already ranks tied for eighth in Marian history with 17 career assists.
Welk (Mount Prospect, Ill.) paced the Marian offense and had a strong end of the season to be named Sabre of the Month. She had a hand in at least one goal in seven of 10 games during the month of October scoring eight goals with a pair of assists for 18 total points. Welk had all eight of her goals come in the final six matches of the season including a five-point game against Ripon where she scored twice with an assist. She also had a multi-goal game against Edgewood to close out the regular season. Welk finished the season with 12 goals and seven assists for 31 points and ranks 10th on the Marian all-time scoring list with 70 points after 44 matches of action.
