FOND DU LAC, Wis. — Congressman Tom Petri (R-WI), who represents Wisconsin’s 6th Congressional District, has been elected to the Marian University Board of Trustees.

Petri, a Fond du Lac resident, is serving his 17th term in the U.S. House of Representatives. He is a current member of the Committee on Education and the Workforce and a member of its Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary Education and its Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Training. He is also a member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, chairs its Aviation Subcommittee and is a member of the Subcommittee on Highways and Transit, which he chaired from 1995 through 2006.

“We are very pleased to have an individual of Rep. Petri’s caliber join the Marian Board,” stated John Nelson, Chairman of the Board. “He will bring a great deal of knowledge and expertise in higher education to the Board and will contribute a national and global perspective to our work.”

Petri is widely viewed as one of the top experts in Congress on education funding and student loan issues. Important Petri legislative initiatives have included those in the areas of student loan reform.

“Congressman Petri will be a valuable addition to our Board of Trustees,” stated Dr. Steven DiSalvo, president of Marian University. “I have had numerous opportunities to meet with him and have been very impressed by his knowledge of the issues we face in higher education today. We will benefit greatly from his input and wise counsel.”

Prior to his initial 1979 election to Congress, Petri was a law clerk to a federal judge; a Peace Corps volunteer and U.S. Agency for International Development worker in Somalia; Executive Director of the Ripon Society; White House aide participating in anti-drug efforts; and a practicing lawyer in Fond du Lac. He is also a published author.

Petri earned a B.A. in 1962 and a J.D. in 1965, both from Harvard University, and he received an honorary degree from Marian University in 1990.
