Celebrate International Day of Peace

August 25, 2012

— Marian University will be celebrating International Day of Peace with a presentation by Patrick Kennelly on September 21 at 7 p.m. in Dorcas Chapel. The presentation, titled “Non-Violent Solutions in Afghanistan,” is sponsored by Marian University’s Social Justice Committee.

Patrick Kennelly is Associate Director of the Marquette University Center for Peacemaking and a Catholic worker for Casa Maria Hospitality House in Milwaukee.

The presentation focuses on Kennelly’s travels with a peace delegation to Afghanistan in March 2011 where he participated in a week of peacemaking organized by the Afghan Youth Peace Volunteers and Voices for Creative Nonviolence. He will share his stories to increase awareness of the struggles in Afghanistan with hopes for peace in the future.

“We are happy to welcome Patrick Kennelly who participated in a peace delegation to strengthen the links between Afghan and American civilians and NGO’s engaged in nonviolent peacemaking and working for human rights,” stated John Morris Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Physical Science at Marian. “He also participated in a symbolic tree planting ceremony with Afghan peacemakers to communicate their rooted commitment to nonviolent, life-giving options and to repairing the destruction from years of war.”

This year marks the 30th anniversary of International Day of Peace which was established by United Nations in 1981.

This event is free and open to the public. For more information contact social justice co-chair John Morris at
