Q: Do I need to be at Countdown to Commencement for the entire time frame?
A: Graduates may attend Countdown to Commencement at their convenience during the time frame and leave once they have received all necessary information and, perhaps, enjoyed some refreshments.
Q: I am unable to attend Countdown to Commencement. Where should I pick up Graduation items?
A: Regalia not picked up at Countdown to Commencement and not ordered for home delivery may be picked up at the Marian University Bookstore.
Pre-Commencement Ceremony Events
Q: I am a PhD in Educational Leadership graduate. Is it appropriate for me to go to the Education Pinning Ceremony or is it for undergraduates?
A: The Pinning Ceremony is for undergraduate students who have earned initial teaching licenses, and graduate students who have completed the Teacher Education or the Special Education program
Q: Can I bring my parents to the Graduates’ Champagne Reception?
A: Absolutely! Graduates and their guests are welcome to attend. RSVPs are required for this event.
Q: Do you offer gluten-free hosts at the Commencement Liturgy?
A: Yes! Please email email@example.com to request a gluten-free host.
Q: Where do I order my cap and gown?
A: Orders should be placed online at https://collegegrad.herffjones.com/. You can purchase cap and tassel, gown, hoods, class rings, graduation announcements and more. You will have a home delivery option (at a fee) or delivery to campus.
Q: What color are the Commencement gowns?
Q: What color are the Master’s and Doctoral hoods?
A: The velvet on the Master’s and Doctoral hoods designate the program of study and are as follows: Nursing (apricot), Education (light blue), Criminal Justice Leadership (gold), Organizational Leadership (gold), Thanatology (gold); Ph.D. (dark blue).
Q: When is the hooding of Master’s and Doctoral students?
A: Master’s students walk into the ceremony with their hood already on. Faculty will be on hand in the robing room to assist with hooding. Doctoral students are hooded on stage by their dissertation chairs.
Q: How do I order honors cords?
A: Honors cords for academic honors are ordered by Marian University and distributed by the Office of the Registrar at check-in for the Commencement ceremony to students who have earned them. Cords for the various honor societies are distributed by the honor society advisors.
Q: I studied abroad for a semester. Should I order an international stole?
A: No. Students who studied abroad can order a Global Scholar/Study Abroad medallion. International stoles should only be ordered by students who hold valid citizenship in another country/countries.
Q: How many wristbands can I request for the Commencement ceremony?
A: The maximum number of wristbands each graduate can request initially is four (4). Additional wristbands may become available and you should indicate your interest on the RSVP form.
Q: I have more guests who would like to attend the Commencement ceremony than the allotted number of wristbands. Can they still attend?
A: Guests without wristbands are invited to bring lawn chairs to the ceremony; however, note that in the event of rain, the tent flaps will be down. In this case, or for those who simply prefer a temperature-controlled environment, guests without wristbands can watch a live stream of the ceremony in the Dr. Richard and Leslie Ridenour Science Center.
Q: I have a guest who requires handicap seating. How do I notify the Special Events staff?
A: When you complete the Graduation RSVP you may indicate handicap seating needs. If you already submitted your RSVP and did not make this indication please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Q: Where is the Marian University Campus Quad?
A: The Quad is the open, grassy area between the Cardinal Meyer Library and the Hornung Student Center.
Q: Can I order a DVD of the Commencement ceremony?
A: No need to. You can download it from YouTube.
