Songs That Tell a Story – The Narrative Tradition in Popular Music
2019 Academic Symposium
Ridenour 2nd Floor Lounge
Most popular songs are in the lyrical tradition: they convey a feeling, describe a setting, present an image, briefly express an emotional conflict. An important sub-tradition of songs, however, are in a different vein, the narrative vein. They not only express conflict, but follow the conflict through a narrative arc, sometimes reaching a discernable climax and usually leading to a clear resolution. This session will showcase several of these narrative songs, in what will hopefully be a highly participatory and interactive manner. All are invited to join in on singing or playing along (on any instrument), at whatever level of involvement with which they are comfortable. Lyrics will be projected.
