student Tirria SmithTirria Smith, a senior from Detroit, Michigan, is majoring in sport and recreation management with a minor in marketing. Her interests include art, sneakers, and basketball. She also loves music, especially hip-hop, R&B, jazz, techno, and pop. She used to rap when she was younger. Her transition to Marian was difficult as she was learning to handle financial and insurance troubles while undergoing a major heart surgery and dealing with the loss of her grandparents and close childhood friend. Although she experienced so much adversity in a single year of college, she has overcome these obstacles and has thrived throughout the rest of her education.

Tirria chose Marian because of the community, academic scholarships, and the basketball team. On campus, she is the President of Black Student Union, a member of TRIO-SSS, Diversity Club, Business Club, and the Women’s Basketball team. Her advice to students is “Never take anything for granted. Be open to new experiences and get out of your comfort zone. Remember that we are still young, so it is okay if you do not have everything figured out yet. Aspire to be the person you needed when you were younger.”
