student Daniel SchwemerDan Schwemer is a junior majoring in homeland security.

“I’m from Theresa, Wisconsin. It’s about 40 minutes south of Fond du Lac. I like to be outdoors. I particularly like hunting, fishing, and four-wheeling. I served five years in the Navy, four years active duty. I’m now in the Army ROTC. I will go back to active after I finish at Marian.

I am the president of Marian’s Student Veteran Organization (SVO). This is my second year in that position. This last Thanksgiving (2017), our group worked together, along with a few local organizations (the local veterans service office and Salute the Troops), to collect food items for veterans for Thanksgiving. We helped 52 families and raised $1,800 in cash and gift cards, in addition to an enormous amount of food items. This all happened in one week.

I came to Marian after meeting a former SVO president. I liked Marian was a veteran-friendly school and they had the major I wanted. Homeland security is a relatively new major. People at Marian really helped me and would go out of their way to do so…which is awesome! Rebecca (Rouse, homeland security program chair) is an amazing professor.

My advice to others is ask questions. You won’t get anywhere in life if you don’t. And, if you don’t like the answer, do some research to find answers. Achieve stuff yourself. People at Marian will help you.”
