POSITION TITLE:  General Accountant

DEPARTMENT:       Business Office

REPORTS TO:          Controller

FLSA:                           Exempt

This position promotes and supports the learning experience of Marian University students by performing accounting functions to ensure accurate and timely recording of transactions and internal and external reporting.


  1. Performs monthly bank reconciliations.
  2. Prepares general journal entries as required to record transactions and adjunct general ledger accounts.
  3. Prepares, tracks and reconciles external, non-student billing invoices.
  4. Posts general ledger monthly; processes journal entries, cash and expenditure transfers, and accounts analysis and reconciliations as necessary. Ensures that general ledger is in balance.
  5. Assist in the month end closing process.
  6. Prepare for and assist in yearend closing and financial audit
  7. Assists in reconciling, maintaining and reporting for assigned accounts.
  8. Assists in the maintenance and ongoing documentation of internal controls, processes and procedures.
  9. Maintains a positive work environment by cooperating in a professional manner with the University community.
  10. Follows and maintains best practices.


  1. Performs other work related duties as assigned.


  1. Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field. Five years of experience.  A combination of education and experience will be considered.
  2. Clear understanding of accounting process.
  3. Demonstrates knowledge of a variety of computer applications including Microsoft Word/Excel and Great Plains.
  4. Strong oral and written communication skills.
  5. Strong analytical and organizational skills.
  6. Ethical comportment and high regard for confidentiality.
  7. Willingness to support the Mission and Core Values of the University.
