This position promotes and supports the learning experience of Marian University students by providing leadership, vision and oversight to the department of Career Services.  Promoting and supporting students, alumni, faculty and employer clients in the development of career education, career identification and search, and the pursuit of employment opportunities corresponding with formal academic pursuits.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Curriculum Design and Management – 25%

  1. Develop learning outcomes and curriculum that meet the needs of each level of student (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, graduate student) and alumni.
  2. Develop and implement Freshmen Externship Program and continue to explore employer partnerships.
  3. Create and deliver Career Champion Program training and development for faculty and staff advisors to assist students with career development and resources.
  4. Conduct workshops, seminars, and other presentations to student, parent, faculty, employer, alumni, and community groups.
  5. Develop and implement resources designed to support and strengthen career development of students.
  6. Facilitate curriculum/program evaluation on a continual basis.
  7. Research best practices and be aware of trends and peer institutions in order to recommend changes and adjustments to the curriculum of Career Services.

Career Education – 25%

  1. Provide career guidance to current students and alumni including assessments, networking, job shadowing, information interviewing, mentoring, and exploration of major area of study.
  2. Provide individual and group career coaching to current students and alumni.
  3. Provide job search assistance to current students and alumni including resume/cover letter writing and review, dress for success, dining etiquette, job board, and mock interviews.
  4. Assist students in identification of experiential learning opportunities including internships and job shadowing opportunities.
  5. Design and implement programming/presentations which address networking, career development, job and/or graduate school search related to specific programs and schools.
  6. Facilitate professionalism orientations for externships, internships, and job placement.
  7. Educate faculty, students, and employers on the usage of online career platform.
  8. Organize and promote opportunities for students to attend career fairs both on and off campus.
  9. Collaborate with the Office of Alumni and Parent Relations for student opportunities.

Academic Advising – 15%

  1. Serve as academic advisor for students in Undeclared programs to provide academic and career assistance and resources.
  2. Develop and facilitate career development and assessment sessions to assist students.
  3. Possess knowledge of Institutional policies and procedures, guidelines, academic programs core curriculum requirement, student resources, and educational opportunities at Marian.
  4. Counsel students on course selection and scheduling for pre-registration periods, and release advising holds on registration after student consultations.
  5. Assist students in the development of degree completion plans and maintains complete up-to-date accurate advising files on each of the students in a secure place.
  6. Monitors progression of students through courses, addressing student problems as the present.
  7. Serve as a liaison for students as appropriate to instructors, programs, academic assistance opportunities and other services.
  8. Send students timely communications to provide updated information about course registration, progression, program requirements, scholarships, externships, and other educational needs.
  9. Responds to inquiries regarding credit transfer, waivers, challenge examinations, CLEP exams, course validation and other concerns.
  10. Ensure transition of advising to the academic advisor of the student’s major when student is ready to declare their major (typically within two semesters).
  11. Assume responsibility for student registration process for incoming freshmen and transfer students in coordination with Office of Admission, Office of the Registrar, and Academic Affairs.
  12. Assist at all New Student Registration sessions and on an individual basis, as needed.
  13. Establish individual and group appointments for inquiring students who request program

Administration – 20%

  1. Develop and deliver a comprehensive and quality career services program to meet the needs of a varied constituency, including traditional and non-traditional students, including online, alumni, and faculty and staff.
  2. Create and oversee a Career Services Advisory Council.
  3. Serve on college collaborative teams and committees as needed.
  4. Develop strong partnerships with academic departments, faculty, staff, and employers to provide effective career services
  5. Responsible for all facets of the post-graduation survey process and for assembling placement statistics of the university.
  6. Track and maintain records of externships, internships, and post-graduate placement.
  7. Facilitate distribution of program reports and success stories to groups of stakeholders and participants to communicate the development of high quality, mission-driven community engaged significant learning opportunities (externships, internships, job placement).
  8. Coordinate and maintain the online career platform, Handshake, through assistance and training of faculty, staff, students and employers.
  9. Prepare and recommend an annual budget for Career Services development efforts to the Dean of Student Success.
  10. Create and maintain web page, brochures and marketing materials concerning Career Services.
  11. Recommend and advise technology needs, assessments, programming and career exploration resources.
  12. Recruit, hire, train, and supervise student employees and interns.

Partnerships – 10%

  1. Develop, expand and maintain business/agency and community networks for student opportunities in areas of first-year externship, field experiences, internships, and post-graduation employment opportunities.
  2. Develop the internal infrastructure/operations and facilitate correspondence of marketing and outreach efforts with strategic employers, potential internship placements, and potential community-engaged learning sites.
  3. Construct policies for employer participation in recruiting programs for externships, internships, and job placement.
  4. Develop and maintain professional relationships through membership and involvement in state, regional, and national professional organizations.
  5. Collaborate with other university members responsible for internships within programs/schools on all facets of the internship experience.
  6. Review and supervise the on-campus recruitment and interviewing processes, resume referral, and job listing services for current students and alumni for external employers.

Other Duties – 5%

  1. Perform other work-related duties as assigned
  2. Serve on university committees as necessary.
  3. Maintain a positive work environment by cooperating in a professional manner with the University community.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, and SKILLS REQUIRED:

  1. Master’s degree in higher education administration or related field required.
  2. Minimum of five years’ experience in higher education career services, student personal/services, or related experience. A combination of education and experience may be considered.
  3. Knowledge of student and career development theory, including adult learning theory.
  4. Ability to keep current with changing job markets including knowledge of business and community resources.
  5. Knowledge to administer and interpret career assessments, such as SII, MBTI, etc.
  6. Ability to communicate effectively (orally and in writing) to a wide variety of constituents, including faculty, staff, students, alumni, parents, employers, etc.
  7. Strong listening and counseling skills, oral and written communication skills, and organization, planning and time management skills.
  8. Must possess motivating skills and demonstrate a positive track record in promoting student success.
  9. Willingness to support the Mission and Core Values of the university.
