Theology
Welcome to the Theology Department!
Marian University’s Theology program, rooted in the Roman Catholic tradition, engages students to think critically about and reflect upon past and current theological stances. Studied within the context of a liberal arts education, the theology program helps students dialogue with culture, media, and other academic disciplines. Furthermore, it provides students with a strong foundation for church ministry and other professions.
All students at Marian University are required to take six credits of Theology before graduation. Students take one course at the 100-level, and the second course must be at the 200-level or above.
Should I major in Theology?
Students with a Theology major may become church religious leaders, missionaries, and educators, and have prepared themselves for acceptance into a seminary or other graduate-level work. Students who declare a Theology major also complete a certain track of focus: pastoral ministry, religious education, graduate studies preparation, or double major.
Should I double-major in Theology?
Because Theology is an important field of study, some students find value in studying Theology along with another chosen major. Theology balances other academic disciplines extremely well, and it prepares students for graduate-level work or other careers found in religious organizations, non-profit organizations, hospitals, and correctional institutions.
What minors are available in the Theology Department?
You have a choice of three minors: pastoral ministry, religious education, and theology. Students who choose one of these minors do so to complement their major focus of study(ies). The pastoral ministry, religious education, and theology minors work well with other academic disciplines, including education, social work, criminal justice, business, nursing, and psychology. You are highly encouraged to choose a minor offered by the Theology department!
