First Year Experience
First Year Experience
The Marian University First Year Experience Program is committed to the success of the first year students, guiding them in their transition to college and educational goal achievement. The program focuses on four areas:
Transition and Adjustment to Campus
Marian University strives to assist students in their transition to college. Two programs that assist with this are:

2011 Sabre Welcome Event is the follow up program to SOAR. This event begins Friday, August 26 and ends on Monday, September 5, 2011. This program is for both residential and commuter students to acclimate students to campus and to assist them in meeting their peers. The focus of the welcome event is to introduce students to the Mission and Values of Marian, through interactive activities and sessions. In addition, the students are introduced to the University community by participating in an Opening Pinning Ceremony. Family and friends are invited to this ceremony as well.
Academic Success
All members of the Marian community are working constantly to create a community of learning. Academic success is one outcome. Students need to set expectations and goals in regard to their academic future. A variety of programs are conducted throughout the semester to help address the academic needs of the first year students. The programs are developed by Student Mentors of the First Year Experience. The student mentors are upper-class students who are available as a resource for first year students.
First Year Seminar course
All first year students are required to take First Year Seminar (GEN101). The course is in place to also assist students in their academic success at Marian University. For more information about the First Year Seminar course, please contact Kate Candee.
First year students are encouraged to seek out venues for academic success:
Wellness
The First Year Experience is committed to providing opportunities for first year students to be active members of the community. Health and Wellness play a key role in the success of first year students. College students need to learn the importance of taking care of one’s self. A variety of programs are developed to help address the needs of the first year students to maintain a positive, healthy lifestyle. The Student Mentors of the First Year Experience work in conjunction with Marian University’s Wellness committee to provide a variety of programs for first year students.
Leadership and Personal Development
First year students need to explore their philosophies of leadership, as well as their own personal development. Personal values, leadership, and strengths are concepts being explored during the first year at Marian University. One-day leadership workshops, programs, and retreats are planned to help students with their journey. The main goal and outcome of Leadership and Personal Development is to help students explore who they are as leaders and apply what they learn to how they will serve their profession and the community.
First year students are encouraged to find ways to get involved in the Marian University Community. During the first week of classes, first year students are encouraged to attend Club Fair, where more than 30 clubs and organizations are represented. Also, students are encouraged to start an organization if their interests are not being met.
