TRiO/McNair Scholars Program

About the Program

The McNair Scholars Program, also known as the Ronald E. McNair Post Baccalaureate Achievement Program, is one of the Federal TRIO programs funded by the U.S. Department of Education.  It is specifically designed to prepare participants for graduate studies through involvement in research and other scholarly activities. This program has been established in 1986 and named in honor of Challenger space shuttle astronaut Ronald E. McNair, Ph.D.  It aims to promote and nurture the next generation of faculty, researchers, and scholars across the United States.

This program has served more than 40 Marian University students since October 2007, under the leadership of Susan Bornstein-Forst, Ph.D.  She is assisted by the dedicated members of Team McNair.  So far, a growing number of McNair Alumni from Marian University have been pursuing their graduate degrees at several institutions.

Future Scholars

The McNair Scholars Program is a select and competitive program seeking top scholars who demonstrate sound academic performance, strong potential for graduate school achievement, and a desire to pursue a career in which a doctorate is required.

Is the McNair program for you?

  • If you would like to be certain about your eligibility to the McNair Program, do not hesitate to contact us for more information.
  • Each semester, several recruitment sessions are organized at Marian University for all prospective students.  However, only sophomore and junior students are admitted in the program.
  • Members of Team McNair provide you with an overview of the program, discuss your academic and professional interests, present the program’s benefits to you, and explain in detail the application process.

Current Scholars

Current McNair scholars are from a wide variety of disciplines.  They are involved the McNair Research Experience under the guidance of their respective academic/professional mentor(s). They also have the opportunity to present their research findings at several venues across the country, including research symposia organized at Marian University.

In preparation to their pursuit of a graduate education, McNair students participate in various graduate school seminars and workshops. Additionally, they visit graduate institutions that offer programs of interest to them.

Moreover, McNair scholars are active participants in numerous Service-Learning activities.

News and Events

In order to keep the community informed about program activities and students’ accomplishments, several editions of the McNair Newsletter are published each academic year. News and other  important announcements  are regularly distributed via Blog and on the program’s Facebook page. The McNair Update and the McNair Calendar contain information about program’s meetings, research symposia, and enrichment trips among many other special events. A photo gallery of the program’s activities is also available for viewing.
