Contact: The Writing Center

The Marian University Writing Center, located in the Administration building (A213), is an academic support service offering tutoring at every stage of the writing process to members of the Marian University community. The Writing Center is committed to individual writing development with the objective of providing useful feedback to all writers. The Writing Center also provides assistance to students who speak English as their second language and Education majors preparing for the writing portion of the Praxis (PPST) exam.

What to bring when you visit the Writing Center:

  • Specific goals for what you want to accomplish in your session.
  • Ideas and questions about your writing.
  • Syllabus or assignment requirements.
  • Something to write with and something to write on.
  • Necessary textbooks or sources.

Suggestions for students

  • Manage your time. Make appointments early enough to allow Writing Center staff to make suggestions and schedule follow-up appointments before your assignment is due.
  • Avoid plagiarism. Academic honesty is entirely the responsibility of the student. Be sure to give credit for information taken from sources. Writing Center staff will be happy to answer your questions about what constitutes plagiarism and how to document sources.
  • Be prepared to participate, ask questions, and discuss. Writing Center tutors discuss your writing with you; you are expected to take an active role in that discussion.

What we do:

  • Provide consultation on any writing project.
  • Offer suggestions on how you can improve your writing.
  • Help you learn to document sources using APA or MLA.
  • Help you to learn to paraphrase or summarize sources to avoid plagiarism.
  • Offer a supportive and caring learning environment.
  • Help you build skills and strategies for writing success.

What we do not do:

  • Edit, proofread, rewrite, or otherwise “fix” your papers.
  • Provide or discuss a grade.
  • Do your writing for you.
  • Tolerate or take responsibility for plagiarism.
