Social Work

Why choose the Social Work major?

Social Work is an ideal major for those interested in impacting the lives of people beyond their community and across the world by empowering our most vulnerable members in society. Marian Social Work graduates are prepared for generalist practice in entry-level positions in the social work profession, including such careers as mental health and substance abuse workers, medical and public health workers, family mediators, policymakers, and public and private social service workers. The generalist practitioner is an academically prepared social worker who assists people singly or together in facilitating a problem-solving process. This process is directed toward changing problem-posing conditions or circumstances that adversely affect the relationships between people and their environments and detract from their mutual well-being. Crucial to this process is the social worker’s recognition of the person/environment interdependence and of the profession’s dual purpose and responsibility with respect to influencing social, as well as individual, change.

Why make it Marian?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, social work is one of the fastest growing professions in the nation. In fact, it is expected to grow as much as 30 percent by 2010. Our Social Work program is accredited by the Council of Social Work Education and provides a diverse educational mix of academics and a 500-hour field internship for invaluable practical experience in your field of study. The philosophical basis of our program is rooted in the liberal arts, which means you’ll understand the interconnectedness between individual and societal well-being, gain an appreciation for human diversity, and develop a respect for holistic problem-solving. You’ll learn from faculty who have experience in the field and bring their firsthand perspectives into the classroom.
