Why choose the English program?Classroom Professor

The Marian English program, available as a major or minor, strives to ensure that all students develop their skills in the composition and appreciation of written discourse while preparing them for a worthwhile career or post-graduate studies. English graduates have gone on to positions with publishing companies, newspapers, literary magazines/journals, advertising firms, and school districts. They are editors, reporters, journalists, poets, and well-read professional educators.

As an English major at Marian University, you have several concentrations of study from which to choose. Receive a traditional, broad-based Bachelor of Arts degree in English or one with a concentration in literature or writing. For students wishing to become high school teachers, we offer a dual English–Secondary Education degree.

In every classroom on campus and in the working world outside of it, reading closely, thinking and writing clearly, and discussing complex topics articulately are the essential skills that will ensure success. These are the skills that a degree in English will foster for you.

As a Marian University English major or minor …

You will read literature from a diversity of cultures, contexts and perspectives, exploring its development within aesthetic, social, cultural and intellectual contexts.

You will investigate literature’s role as an expression of or challenge to a society’s values.

You will read and think critically and reflectively as you delve into the theories and practices of literary criticism.

You will enhance your skills in writing thoughtful and sophisticated expository, argumentative and analytical prose.

You will be given the opportunity to write your own creative works, to have them critiqued and, possibly, to have them published.

You will erase some of the boundaries between disciplines and clearly recognize the relationships between the study of English and studies throughout your college curriculum.

You will immerse yourself in the ambiguity and complexity of human experience.

You will enjoy yourself immensely as you read and write and think about poems, stories, novels and plays.

Why make it Marian?

Employers often say that they will hire college graduates who have excellent writing skills. Our English program has a foundation in the liberal arts but fully offers students opportunities to enhance their skills in expository and creative writing, to increase their understanding and appreciation of literature representing a variety of cultures, genres and perspectives, and to explore the theory and practice of literary criticism. You will discover talented faculty who are committed to helping you achieve your goals and open doors to publication of your own works through student publications.
