NAC honors three Sabres

(Waukesha, WI) - The Northern Athletics Conference has announced the awards for the 2009 men's soccer season, as voted on by the conference's head coaches. Included are 14-member First and Second All-NAC Teams, honorable mention selections, a 14-member All-Freshman Team, a 12-member All-Sportsmanship Team and the four individual awards of Defensive Player, Offensive Player, Freshman and Coach of the Year.

Marian's Nick Henkemeyer (Prior Lake, MN) and Jim Chavez (Platteville, WI) were named NAC Honorable Mention selections, while Joel Vera (Fond du Lac, WI) was named to the All-Freshman Team. Henkemeyer was also named to the All-Sportsmanship Team.

Henkemeyer, a senior, started in goal all 18 games this past season and sported a 1.52 goals-against-average. He recorded 94 saves and posted five shutouts. Henkemeyer started three years in goal for the Sabres.

Chavez, a junior midfielder, started in 16 games this season and scored one goal and added two assists. He was solid as a defensive midfielder and helped guide the Sabre attack by gaining possession.

Vera started in all 18 games as a freshman and added one assist from his defensive position. He was a big part of Marian's defense posting five shutouts.

Men's Soccer (October 27, 2009)
Sabres shut out Maranatha
(Watertown, WI) -
Marian University closed out their season on Tuesday afternoon with a 3-0 victory over Maranatha Baptist Bible College. With the victory, the Sabres snapped an eight-game winless streak and finished 5-11-2 overall and 2-7-2 in the Northern Athletics Conference.

Neither team scored in the first period, but Marian recorded a big second period as they tallied three goals. Milan Stupar (Grayslake, IL) got the scoring started as he scored off an assist from Peter Xiong (Fond du Lac, WI) at the 51:06 mark. Just over ten minutes later, Jose Hernandez (Sheboygan Falls, WI) scored to make it 2-0. Then, at the 66:48 mark, Freddy Briones (Sheboygan, WI) scored to close out the scoring. More

 

Men's Soccer (October 24, 2009)
Marian and Benedictine play to a tie
(Fond du Lac, WI) -
Marian University and Benedictine University played 110:00 minutes on Saturday, but neither team could score as they settled for a 0-0 tie in double-overtime at Smith Fields. Marian out-shot the Eagles in the contest, 23-10, but couldn't find the back of the net. With the tie, the Sabres are now 4-11-2 overall and 1-7-2 in the Northern Athletics Conference.

Marian put nine shots-on-goal, compared to Benedictine's two. Marian was able to get off five shots in the second overtime period, but were not able to find the back of the net.

Nick Henkemeyer (Prior Lake, MN) stopped two shots in the contest.

Marian is back in action again on Tuesday, as they will play at Maranatha Baptist Bible College. More 

 

Men's Soccer (October 21, 2009)
Second half goal propels Lakeland over Marian
(Fond du Lac, WI) -
Lakeland College scored the game's only goal in the 69th minute on Wednesday night at Smith Fields to pull out the victory. Lakeland is now 8-7-1 overall and 6-3-0 in the Northern Athletics Conference. Marian is now 4-11-1 overall and 1-7-1 in the NAC.

In very foggy conditions, the Muskies out-shot the Sabres 11-6. Both defenses played well, but a misplayed ball by Marian resulted in Lakeland's goal.

Nick Henkemeyer (Prior Lake, MN) stopped 7 shots in the defeat.

Derek Pitterle scored the game-winner for Lakeland. More
