Marian University to host “Christian Understanding of Capitalism in Light of Pope Francis” presentation, March 6


FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University's Social Justice Committee will be hosting the "Christian Understanding of Capitalism in Light of Pope Francis" presentation on Thursday, March 6 from 11:30 - 12:35 p.m. in the Stayer Center room 217/218.

The keynote speaker for the event is Don Timmerman, an ordained priest and long-time member of the Casa Maria Catholic Worker community in Milwaukee. His presentation will discuss Pope Francis' past and the implications of the Pope's teachings on capitalism.

Timmerman entered the seminary at St. Paul Major Seminary in Kipalapala, Tanzania, where he assisted Mother Therese with her hospice clinic. Timmerman graduated and was ordained in 1969, and served for three years at St. Peter and Paul parish in Lukeledi, Tanzania. Since 1973, Timmerman has been part of the Casa Maria Catholic Worker community, and has been involved with Amnesty International, Peace Action Wisconsin and Milwaukee War Tax Resistance.

In addition to this event, the Social Justice Committee will be hosting Sister Cyndi Nienhaus, CSA, assistant professor of education, as she presents on, "Pope Francis and Social Justice," on Monday, April 14 at 11:15 a.m. in Stayer Center room 217/218.
