Marian, UW-FDL to host free concerts

FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University and the University of Wisconsin - Fond du Lac will be hosting two concerts during the month of May.

The UW-FDL and Marian University Community Concert Band will perform on Friday, May 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Prairie Theater. The concert band is comprised of students from both campuses in addition to members of the Fond du Lac community, and directed by Dr. Brian J. Lydeen, associate professor of music and director of Bands & Jazz Studies at Marian University.

The concert will feature the music of British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams, particularly his English Folk Songs Suite and Sea Songs. Other works on the program include a movement from Samuel Hazo's Minnesota Portraits called "Across the Halfpipe" depicting the art of snowboarding, a lovely setting of the Irish folk song Down by the Salley Gardens arranged by Michael Sweeney, and a suite of music from the film "Superman" composed by John Williams. In addition, David Hein, assistant professor of music at Marian University, will be a guest piano soloist on a piece entitled Walden by composer Chris Sharp.

Marian University will also present a chamber music concert on Monday, May 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the Hornung Student Center. The concert will feature the Marian University and UW-FDL Saxophone Quartet and the Marian University Steel Drum Band. The saxophone quartet program includes several diverse selections ranging from an arrangement of a Haydn string quartet to Renaissance vocal music and even a jazz standard. The steel drum band will perform Bailando La Soca, Carpe Dium, Not a Care and Bob Marley's Three Little Birds.

Both concerts are free and open to the public. For more information about the concert, contact Dr. Brian Lydeen at
