FOND DU LAC, Wis. — The Marian University English Department’s Writers Reading Series will celebrate National Poetry Month with a reading of Wisconsin poets, featuring Wisconsin Poet Laureate Bruce Dethlefsen on Tuesday, May 1 at 7:00 p.m. in the Stayer Center Auditorium.
Dethlefsen has published two chapbooks, A Decent Reed and Something Near the Dance Floor, which won him an honorable mention from the Council of Wisconsin Writers for their Posner Poetry Award. His first-full length book of poetry, Breather, received an Outstanding Achievement Award in Poetry from the Wisconsin Library Association. His second full-length book, Unexpected Shiny Things, was published in 2011 by Cowfeather Press, a year after he was named the fourth Wisconsin Poet Laureate.
Dethlefsen’s poetry has been nominated twice for a Pushcart Prize and has been published in journals and anthologies. Several of his poems have appeared on the website Your Daily Poem, and two were featured on Garrison Keillor’s The Writer’s Almanac.
“Because Bruce sees his position as poet laureate as being an ambassador of poetry for the state, and because we want to show our support for his efforts, we wanted to do something just a little different this year,” says Dr. John Walser, Marian associate professor of English. “Not only will Bruce be reading, but we also have six or seven accomplished poets coming in and reading a poem or two before he reads. To us, this is what poetry and Bruce’s laureateship are about: a celebration of who we are and where we live, a celebration of many voices.”
For this event, which is free and open to the public, Marian’s English department will be donating the honorarium it pays its readers directly to the Wisconsin Poet Laureate Fund.
