Former Packer to Speak at Marian Spring Commencement

March 29, 2012

FOND DU LAC, Wis. — Marian University has announced former Green Bay Packer George Koonce as the main speaker for its spring graduation ceremony on Saturday, May 19 at 12:30 p.m.

Koonce was a linebacker and eight-year starter for the Packers from 1992 to 1999—including a trip to the Super Bowl in 1996—and will celebrate earning his Ph. D. in Sports Administration with his own graduation from Marquette University on May 20. In addition to being able to relate to students reaching a graduation milestone, he has a passion for inspiring and assisting young people in reaching and realizing their goals.

Retired since 2000 following a season with the Seattle Seahawks, Koonce is currently the Director of Development for Marquette’s Urban Scholars Program. He previously served as Senior Associate Athletics Director at Marquette University, Director of Player Development for the Green Bay Packers and Special Assistant to the Athletic Director at East Carolina University, where he earned his Master’s in Sports Management after having been a star linebacker on their football team.

Marian’s commencement ceremony will be preceded by a graduation liturgy at 10:30 that morning in Dorcas Chapel.
