FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University's SocialJustice Committee will host a special presentation "Creating aSeason of Civility: The Role of Religious Communities in Addressingour Diverse Politics" by Dr. Peter Bakken on Monday, September 17,2012 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Sodexo Dining Room in theStayer Center.
Focusing on the idea of civility, Dr. Bakken will explore whatcivility is and why it is important in society. Participantsof the presentation will engage in discussion about societal changethat supports the value and dignity in every person.
Dr. Bakken serves as the Coordinator for Public Policy at theWisconsin Council of Churches. Through this role, Dr. Bakken worksin promoting faith-based advocacy on issues from climate change tohunger and health care reform. Dr. Bakken also served as theCoordinator of Outreach for the Au Sable Institute of EnvironmentalStudies for 14 years. Dr. Bakken earned his PhD in Theology fromthe University of Chicago, where he focused on theological andecological assumptions of Aldo Leopold and Joseph Sittler. Hispublications include Church on Earth: Grounding Your Ministry in aSense of Place (with Jeff Wild) and a collection of writings byJoseph Sittler, Evocations of Grace: Writings on Ecology, Theologyand Ethics (coedited with Steven Bouma-Prediger).
