Marian University and UW- Fond du Lac to host “Bringing Culture Back into Agriculture” presentation, April 12

FOND DU LAC, Wis. — Marian University and UW-Fond du Lac will host John Peck, executive director of Family Farm Defenders, as he presents “Bringing Culture Back into Agriculture—How Food Sovereignty Can Feed the World, Save the Family Farm and Cool the Planet” on Tuesday, April 12.

Peck will present at UW-Fond du Lac at 12:00 p.m. in room UC 113-114, as well as give an evening encore presentation in Marian’s Stayer Center Auditorium at 7:00 p.m. The presentation introduces the concept of food sovereignty and the important role sustainable small-scale agriculture can play in solving the climate crisis.

Through Family Famer Defenders, Peck assists the organization in promoting sustainable agriculture, rural justice, workers’ rights, animal welfare, consumer safety, fair trade and food sovereignty. Peck also currently serves as an instructor of economics and environmental studies at Madison Area Technical College (MATC). Peck earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from Reed College and his doctoral degree in land resources from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

In addition to Peck’s presentations, the Just Fare Market will be selling fair trade goods in the Stayer Center Atrium on April 12 from 12:00 p.m. – 8 p.m. and again on April 13 from 9:00 a.m. – 3 p.m.

“We are happy to be collaborating with UW-Fond du Lac for an event surrounding food production issues. Peck will speak on the difficulties that family farmers are facing in the current economy, as well as the important role they need to play in the future of U.S. agriculture,” said John Morris, professor of chemistry at Marian and member of the Social Justice Committee.
