High school students experience nursing as a career choice

Summer Nurse Camp 2011

June 22, 2011

FOND DU LAC, Wis. — Twenty-one high school students took part in the ninth annual summer nurse camp sponsored by Marian University and Agnesian HealthCare in June.

Participants came from a variety of high schools, including Beaver Dam, Fond du Lac, Hortonville, Kewaskum, Neenah, Omro, Sheboygan, St. Mary Springs and Winnebago Lutheran Academy.

The camp was a four-day intensive immersion experience with hands-on opportunities in a nursing skills lab and job shadowing with a registered nurse at St. Agnes Hospital, in addition to observing various procedures. Instructional sessions were held on various nursing topics with nurses from different specialties speaking to participants.

All participants received first aid and CPR instruction. In addition, they were exposed to how paramedics and emergency personnel operate in lifesaving situations, including the arrival of the Flight for Life.

“The summer nurse camp was very successful” said Nancy Noble, associate professor of nursing at Marian University and the camp coordinator. “Students reported they learned about the diverse opportunities within nursing and that the camp gave them an opportunity to really observe what nurses do in a variety of settings.”
