FOND DU LAC, Wis.-Marian College's 21st annual Heritage Festival of the Arts will have an international flavor.
The 2007 festival will be held on the Marian campus Sunday, Sept. 9, with a Catholic liturgy at 9 a.m. and the festival running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This year's music selections will feature two well known area acts, the Mayville High School All-Star Alumni Steel Drum Band, and Copper Box. The Mayville steel drum band, scheduled to play at 11 a.m., is the first complete steel drum band in a Wisconsin school, with now seven groups, ranging from middle school students to adults, performing everywhere from school functions to Florida amusement parks. Copper Box's "accordion swamp rock" received four Wisconsin Area Music Industry nominations in 2005 and 2006. Copper Box, on stage at 2 p.m., has performed with the Little River Band, Buckwheat Zydeco, Little Feat, Brave Combo,The Radiators, Little Big Town, Little Texas, Foreigner lead singer Lou Gramm, Marcia Ball, C.J. Chenier and W.C. Clark.
The traditional Kids Kingdom, whose theme is "It's a Small World," will feature heritage musician David H.B.Drake, known for music that evokes "deep heartland roots,soaring northern forests and the waters of the Great Lakes." Milwaukee magician Rick Allen and Oneida storyteller Debra Morningstar also will be featured at Kids Kingdom. Other children's activities will evoke Africa, Australia, China, Denmark,France, Japan and the Netherlands.
Heritage Festival of the Arts has acquired a regional reputation for outstanding art. This year's featured contemporary artists are serigrapher Larry Basky, whose work focuses on the natural environment; Paula Hare, whose work is included in the White House permanent collection and displayed in a number of galleries, museums and juried art exhibitions across the country; and Dane Pecore, whose drawings of architecture animals, landscapes and people evoke somber moods and quiet imagery.
