Marian College alumnus Alonzo Kelly '96 is the recipient of the 2006 National Urban Alonzo Kelly.jpgLeague Young Professionals Outstanding Central Regional Member award.

Kelly, president of the Milwaukee Urban League Young Professionals, received the award at the National Urban League Conference/Young Professionals Influencer Summit. This award is the first national or regional award in the history of the Milwaukee Urban League Young Professionals.

"Being nationally recognized is quite an honor," says Kelly. "I am proud of my membership in the Milwaukee Urban League and the example that the Young Professionals set in our community. I share this award with many others because I certainly couldn't have done it alone."

Kelly is an Ambulatory Care Manager at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin and an adjunct professor with the University of Phoenix and Concordia University Wisconsin.

At Marian, he was a Trio peer counselor, a mentor at Sabish Junior High School, treasurer of the Marian College Student Senate, president of the Multicultural Student Association, and a member of the Sabre men's basketball team. Kelly attended Marian after graduating from St. Lawrence Seminary in Mount Calvary.

"St. Lawrence Seminary High School and Marian College should be credited with shaping a young boy and shaping him into a man of service and leadership," says Kelly. "The experiences I had while attending school served as teachable moments for the rest of my life. Because of my time at Marian, I have a new appreciation for terms like community, education, service, and leadership. I truly hope that St. Lawrence Seminary and Marian College are able to share this award with me."

The Milwaukee chapter nominated Kelly for this award because of his tireless community service work, volunteering many hours as a facilitator of classes as part of the Focus Program at the Guest House of Milwaukee, which helps disadvantaged men develop job preparedness skills. Kelly also was a voice on many pertinent issues in the community this year, writing editorials for MKE magazine and the Business Journal Serving Greater Milwaukee.

Kelly is a trustee for the Milwaukee Renaissance Academy and a member of the St. Lawrence Seminary Ministry Council and the boards of the Milwaukee Urban League, Guest House of Milwaukee, and the Hispanic Professionals of Greater Milwaukee. He is a member of the Milwaukee Leaders Forum and IDEAL Milwaukee.
